QUESTION: I would like to use Adobe Photoshop to prepare my digital photographs for use on my site pages. What steps should I take?

ANSWER:

Adobe Photoshop has a Save for Web feature that is great for optimizing and saving your images in Photoshop. Before using this feature, you'll need to adjust the resolution of your image:

  1. Open your image in Photoshop
  2. Go to Image/Image Size... in the menu
  3. In the Image Size window, adjust the resolution to 72 pixels/inch and click OK
  4. Your image may change size on the screen as the resolution adjusts.

Once your resolution is adjusted, you can proceed to crop or resize an image through the Image/Image Size... or the Image/Canvas Size... menu options.

Once your image is the appropriate size for the screen, you can proceed with optimizing it for the web. Go to File/Save for Web...

  1. The Save for Web window will open; click the "2 Up" tab in the far left corner
  2. On the left, you will see the Original image, on the right, the Optimized web image which is determined by the Optimization window on the right.
  3. For photos, select JPG from File Format window (under the word "Preset:")
  4. Check the "Optimized" checkbox
  5. Set Quality to 50, and Blur to 0; Matte color can default to white.
  6. In the main image windows, you can see the Original file size, as well as the Optimized file size.
  7. Adjust the quality settings up and down, and watch how the Optimized file size changes; you want to achieve the lowest possible file size with the best quality image. Compare the images side by side as you adjust these settings.
  8. When you are happy with your final Optimized file, click the Save button.
  9. Save the new image with a revised file name so that you don¹t overwrite your original file (ie, if your original file was photo.jpg, save this new one as photo-01.jpg or photo-new.jpg).

You can add any of these optimized images to your web pages through Contributes Image button. All photos should be saved as JPGs and should be less than 250 kb in file size (preferably much smaller).
